Have Fun, Make Friends, See New Things.

For over almost 110 years, Boy Scouts worked to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.

Becoming a Boy Scout Leader/Assistant Leader/Committee Member

Many parents, guardians and community members may be interested in registering to help as a leader, assistant leader or committee member.  Of course any parent or guardian can volunteer to help at a meeting with set-up and cleaning up; however, to volunteer in an official capacity, you will need to meet the Pennsylvania Child Protection Legislation Requirements for Volunteers.

The following is a detailed guide with information pertaining to all of the requirements for leaders and volunteers to complete, should you be interested. Unfortunately, the Boy Scout Troop cannot submit your application until all of these requirements are completed; however, as a first year volunteer, the Pack will pay for your registration fee and any training fees should you wish to attend additional training courses throughout the Hudson Valley Council.

1. Complete a Boy Scouts of America Adult Volunteer Application. The Boy Scout Troop has paper applications or this can be found online at: http://www.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/524-501.pdf

2. Complete and submit your certificate of training for the Boy Scouts of America Youth Protection Training. This has to be complete in person at a District Roundtable OR online at: http://www.scouting.org/Training/YouthProtection.aspx

3. Complete a Pennsylvania Criminal History Report and submit the certificate of completion. This is done online at: https://epatch.state.pa.us/Home.jsp Ensure that you select the “New Record Check (Volunteers Only)” button. There is a fee associated with this you will have to pay.

4. Complete a Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance. This can be done online and the fee is waived for volunteers. You will need to create and individual account at: https://www.compass.state.pa.us/cwis/public/home

5. Pennsylvania Resident Status

a. If you have been a Pennsylvania resident for less than (10) years, you will need to complete a federal bureau of Investigation (FBI) Criminal History report and get fingerprinted at an approved location. You can pre-register at: https://www.pa.cogentid.com/index_dpwNew.htm The closest location to get fingerprinted is: The Ship Shop, 700 Route 6, Suite #1, Shohola, Pennsylvania 18458. There is a fee associated for this you will have to pay.

b. If you have been a Pennsylvania resident for more than ten years, you will need to show proof via either a voter registration card or tax documentation within your township. A memorandum of record can then be filed waiving the FBI Criminal History requirement.

Please contact the Scoutmaster, Committee Chair or Charter Organization Representative if you have any additional questions regarding these requirements.
